Decorative Concrete to Beautify Chinese Cities

After nearly 40 years of urbanization, nowadays concrete buildings can be found everywhere in China. However, in recent years, people is beginning to get tired of these gray concrete forests and set off to seek new solutions for aesthetic construction designs. During this quest for architectural beauty, decorative concrete catches the eye of Chinese architects.

Decorative Concrete, Increasingly Popular in China

Even though decorative concrete was not introduced to China until the late 1960s, considerable progress has been made in the application and development of this technology. So far, decorative concrete has been adopted in many large-scale influential projects, such as Nanjing Youth Olympic Center, Beijing Forestry University and Research Center, Qian Xuesen Library & Museum, Phoenix Center, Jiujiang City Culture and Art Center, etc, which represent the most cutting-edge decorative concrete technology in China and are highly acclaimed by the world’s professionals.

This increasing use of decorative concrete mainly stems from people’s want for cities of more varieties and colors. With rapid economic development and improved living standards, Chinese residents begin to take more interest in visual and spiritual enjoyment, therefore needs for colorful constructions are generated. It is believed that in the near future decorative concrete will play a even more important role in China’s urban-rural development, especially in the following two fields.

Theme Parks and Public Facilities Containing Numerous Opportunities

Decorative concrete has long been a kind of very common building material for theme parks in western countries, and now it has also been introduced to Chinese theme parks. For example, in the recently unveiled Shanghai Disneyland, a large amount of decorative concrete has been applied to constructions with complicated patterns and multiple colors. Statistics suggests that in the next 5 years, 59 new theme parks and 5 new water parks with a total investment of 23,800 million USD will be put into operation in China, which will generate a strong demand for decorative concrete.

Besides theme parks, public cultural facilities also contain enormous business opportunities. In order to provide as many opportunities as possible for residents to enjoy refined culture, the Chinese government never grudges investing in cultural facilities. In 2014, the annual investment in cultural development was up to 58.344 billion RMB. And as one of the province with the largest annual investment in public cultural facilities, Guangdong plans on further improving its public cultural service system and more cultural facilities, such as libraries, museums, etc, will be built during the 13th five-year plan.
